Slag-Enriched Concrete Mix Overview
Built for the demands of major construction
Standard concrete mixes can fall short on large-scale projects. Heat buildup during hydration, workability challenges, shrinkage, and the risk of alkali-silica reaction (ASR) are all concerns that can compromise structural integrity over time. Ozinga’s slag-enriched concrete mixes are formulated to address these issues directly, giving your team a more reliable, high-performing material from pour to cure.
Why specify slag-enriched concrete?
Reduced heat of hydration
Slag lowers the rate of heat generated during hydration—a critical advantage when pouring large foundations, bridges, piers, and other mass concrete structures where thermal cracking is a real risk.
Superior workability
Slag-enriched mixes are easier to place and manipulate. Improved viscosity and reduced segregation give crews greater control, supporting a cleaner, more consistent finish across large pours.
Less bleeding and shrinkage
Mixes with high slag content exhibit significantly less bleeding and shrinkage than straight cement alternatives, helping to maintain structural accuracy and reduce the likelihood of surface defects.
Enhanced ASR mitigation
Alkali-silica reaction is one of the leading causes of long-term concrete expansion and cracking. Slag cement reduces alkali availability and limits the water needed for reactions to occur, substantially lowering ASR risk in hardened concrete.
Lower permeability for long-term durability
Slag cement generates additional calcium-silicate-hydrate (CSH) during hydration, producing a denser concrete paste with lower permeability. This protects the structure from aggressive chemicals and reduces leaching over time.
A more sustainable choice
Slag is a recycled by-product of iron production, requiring considerably less energy to produce than traditional Portland cement. Specifying slag-enriched mixes contributes to lower CO2 emissions and supports your project’s sustainability and carbon-reduction goals.

Slag-Enriched Concrete Mixes FAQs
Below are answers to our most frequently asked questions. For more information or if you need support, please contact us.
Slag-enriched concrete performs particularly well in large-scale infrastructure applications including major foundations, bridges, piers, dams, retaining walls, marine structures, and high-rise buildings. Any project where heat of hydration, permeability, or long-term durability are primary concerns stands to benefit.
Slag extends hydration and setting times, which means early strength (before 28 days) develops more gradually than with straight Portland cement. However, slag-enriched mixes consistently achieve greater long-term strength, making them the preferred choice for projects where long-term structural performance is the priority. See our Compressive Strength Comparison chart.
Slag can partially or substantially replace Portland cement in a concrete mix, depending on project specifications and performance requirements. Ozinga’s team can work with you to determine the optimal mix design for your application.
