ADA Tiles, Detectable Warning Surfaces, & Truncated Domes

ADA Tiles Overview

ADA Tiles, also known as tactile walking surface indicators (TWSI) or detectable warning panels, are special paver attachments that help the visually impaired to safely utilize pedestrian crossings, intersections, or hazardous drop-offs like transit platforms.

These tactile warning surfaces, mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act, feature a raised, bumpy, slip-resistant surface in a different color than the surrounding concrete to assist with wayfinding. When installed properly, detectable warning panels can keep you and your neighborhood safe.

We can provide polymer, cast iron, or galvanized tactile paving options depending on your location and what your project calls for. We also boast an inventory of dozens of possible radius solutionsโ€”way more than youโ€™ll find at a supply store. All our tiles adhere to ADA guidelines and IDOT specifications.

How to Calculate Radius

Our ADA tiles include linear, plate, and wedge options that can be combined to create more than 40 different radius configurations. To find your proper configuration, simply measure the chord length and height at the rear of the curb where the tactile surface will be applied.

ADA WARNING TILES

HOW DETECTABLE WARNING TILES WORK

Detectable warning surfaces are required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Federal guidelines require warning mats to be of a minimum size and for truncated domes to meet specific diameter, height, and spacing requirements. These surface-mounted truncated domes can be felt through a cane, walker, wheelchair, or a person’s feet.

DOME SIZE

Truncated domes in a detectable warning surface shall have a base diameter of 0.9 inch (23 mm) minimum and 1.4 inches (36 mm) maximum.

DOME SPACING

Truncated domes in a detectable warning surface shall have a center-to-center spacing of 1.6 inches (41mm) minimum and 2.4 inches (61 mm) maximum.

CONTRAST

Detectable warning surfaces shall contrast visually with adjacent walking surfaces either light-on-dark, or dark-on-light.

ADA Tiles, Detectable Warning Surfaces, & Truncated Domes Installation

Detectable warning surfaces can be installed in wet concrete or applied directly to an existing concrete surface with the proper sealant. Installation requirements as outlined by the Proposed Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities in the Public Right-of-Way (PROWAG) include:

  • 2โ€™โ€™ concrete border
  • 24โ€™โ€™ of patterned domes that cover the full width of the ramp
  • 5โ€™ set-back
  • 1.6โ€™โ€™-2.4โ€™โ€™ linear and radial center-to-center dome spacing
