Purdue Northwest Construction Club Explores the Opportunities in Concrete with IRMCA and Ozinga

The Purdue Northwest Construction Club had the opportunity to get a practical look at the opportunities available within the concrete industry during an IRMCA member site visit hosted by Ozinga. This event provided university students with a unique chance to connect with industry experts, gain hands-on experience, and visualize themselves in a concrete career post-graduation.

Paul Winkle, the Vice President of Indiana Sales at Ozinga, kicked off the event with an engaging presentation shedding light on various roles and career opportunities within the construction industry. His wealth of experience in the field was invaluable, offering students a glimpse into the exciting possibilities that await them.

Donn Thompson, a representative from the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) in Illinois, presented on NRMCA’s ‘Build with Strength‘ initiative. Thompson’s presentation emphasized the durability, safety, and sustainability of concrete. He showcased how concrete isn’t just a building material; it’s a solution to some of the most pressing challenges in the construction industry today, including building resilience and combating climate change.

The students then got a behind-the-scenes tour of Ozinga’s Chinatown facilities, showcasing the process of production from the certified laboratory where quality is tested to the dispatch center that ensures timely deliveries. They witnessed the intricate puzzle of plant operations and logistics, where precision and efficiency are key.

The site visit provided students with a rich and multifaceted experience. They learned that the concrete world is far more than just mixing cement and water; it’s an essential, ever-growing sector with numerous career pathways.

Students left the event with a newfound appreciation for concrete and a deeper understanding of its role in shaping our built environment. They also gained valuable insights from industry leaders like Paul Winkle and Donn Thompson, who emphasized that the future of the concrete industry is about building a sustainable and resilient future.

As the Purdue Northwest Construction Club continues to nurture its relationship with the IRMCA and industry leaders like Ozinga, the future for these aspiring construction professionals looks brighter than ever. With the knowledge and experiences gained from this event, they are better equipped to pursue rewarding careers and make lasting contributions within the world of concrete and construction.
