Ozinga Ready Mix, Local Contractors Earn Two IRMCA Project Awards for Northwest Indiana work

INDIANAPOLIS – Ozinga Ready Mix was recognized with two honors from the Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association, earning awards in both the Aviation and Sustainability categories for projects that demonstrate performance, innovation, and long-term value.

Ozinga earned the Aviation Award for its role in the Cargo Logistics Apron project at Gary International Airport, supporting the airport’s long-term vision as a major cargo hub for the Chicago metropolitan region.

The project utilized approximately 53,000 cubic yards of concrete and was completed in less than four months. The work was a collaborative effort between designer Mead & Hunt, engineer NGC Corporation, and concrete finisher Superior Construction.

The project expanded cargo operations in the airport’s northwest quadrant, separating freight activity from passenger traffic and accommodating future aviation demand. Work included large-scale, FAA-specification concrete paving designed for heavy aircraft loading and long-term durability.

Ozinga also received the Sustainability Award for the construction of slipform concrete silos at an Ozinga Slag facility—an investment supporting the production and distribution of low-carbon cementitious materials.

The project included 3,270 cubic yards of concrete and required a continuous 24/7 slipform pour over eight days, reaching heights of approximately 185 feet. Construction partners included Borton Construction, Morrison Construction, Raffin Construction Company and concrete pumper YARD1.

Strategically located with access to rail, truck, and water transportation via the Great Lakes and inland waterways, the facility is positioned to serve customers across the U.S. and Canada with more than one million tons of low-carbon materials, supporting infrastructure and data-center development aligned with net-zero goals.

“These two projects reflect how collaboration and innovation drive both performance and sustainability,” said Zach Babcock of Ozinga Ready Mix. “Whether supporting aviation growth or advancing low-carbon materials, our teams worked closely with contractors and owners to deliver solutions that meet today’s demands while preparing for the future.”

The awards were presented during the 2026 IRMCA Indiana Winter Mixer, recognizing Ozinga’s collaboration with contractors, engineers, and owners on complex infrastructure projects serving regional and national needs.

“From aviation infrastructure to sustainability-focused production facilities, these projects show how concrete continues to evolve to meet performance and environmental goals,” said IRMCA Executive Director Chad Montgomery. “Ozinga’s work demonstrates the leadership and innovation shaping the future of our industry.”
