High Albedo Concrete & Albedo Materials

High-Albedo Concrete Overview

High-albedo concrete is a special type of pavement that reflects more light than dark-colored materials due to its lighter color. This causes the concrete to maintain a lower surface temperature, resulting in less energy needed to cool buildings and less energy consumed by nighttime lighting, not to mention reducing the “heat island” effect found on many asphalt parking lots in the summer. High-albedo is especially useful in parking lots and can be used for concrete overlays on roads.

High-Albedo Concrete Applications

Concrete Overlay and Whitetopping

Fully repaving roads can be expensive and time-consuming, especially in harsh climates where freeze-thaw cycles can weaken the pavement and result in potholes. By using a Concrete Overlay & Whitetopping, surfaces can be repaired quickly, often returning to regular service in a few days.

Concrete Parking Lots

To assist civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, contractors, developers, owners, and specifiers, Ozinga provides detailed concrete road and parking lot design recommendations, including joint layout and load transfer plans. This program helps specifiers deliver quality 20-year pavement designs to ensure successful concrete projects. Also included in these recommendations is a review of your current asphalt pavement sections.

Ozinga provides Parking Lot Design Assistance services for conventional concrete projects as well as for projects interested in using pervious concrete, roller compacted, and concrete overlays.

Energy Consumption Benefits

During the day, dark asphalt and building facades absorb light from the sun, turning it into heat and raising ambient temperatures in dense urban areas.
By the time the sun goes down, the heat that was absorbed into the asphalt and buildings is finally released, raising nighttime temperatures higher than they normally would be. This is the essence of the heat island effect.

6 Popular Uses for Concrete

Concrete is a durable and versatile building material that is found all over the globe. It’s used on some of the world’s most unique concrete structures, and it can be found regularly throughout your neighborhood. Whether you’re looking to tackle a project or simply want to know more about the material, take a look at

How a Concrete Parking Lot Can Pay You Back

Due to its durability and low maintenance requirements, concrete is an excellent choice for driveways, roads, and especially parking lots. However, the industry notion that concrete is far more expensive than other pavements isn’t necessarily true. Designed properly and early enough in the project, concrete pavements can be very price competitive upfront. Low to no
