A Historic Pour: Logistics Warehouse Expansion

130 ready mix trucks, five concrete pumps, four conveyers, over 9100 cubic yards of concrete delivered and poured in less than 12 hours. This historic project was led by Scurto Cement Construction in partnership with Victory Unlimited Construction and Yard1 Concrete Pumping & Conveying.

This new expansion of a logistics facility, which will boast 133,000 square feet of cold storage, represents one of the largest cold storage warehouses in Northwest Indiana. This significant expansion to the Northwind Crossings campus will bring 90 additional full-time employees to the facility.

Hobart Mayor Josh Huddlestun shared, “It’s pretty big. It shows their commitment to the area and the work we’ve done here. They’re expanding, reinvesting in the area and growing their workforce.”

“It’s one of Ozinga’s largest pours,” Huddlestun said. “It goes to show Northwest Indiana and Hobart are hotbeds for development. Northwinds has been a tremendous industrial park development for us. It showed it could be done in Northwest Indiana and had a ripple effect across the Region.”

At roughly 1:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 6th, a fleet of Ozinga mixers entered the jobsite in Hobart, Indiana. Numerous concrete pumps and conveyors, the biggest available, were stretched out and ready to go.

There was a steady stream of mixers, one showing up about every 40 seconds. Ozinga had 130 mixers from multiple plants deliver, at a sustained pace, well over 800 cubic yards per hour for hours. At times, pacing nearly 1,000 cubic yards per hour.

“It was truly inspiring to see so many talented professionals perform their jobs with precision and excellence. Without a doubt, this was one of the highlights of my nearly 25-year career,” shared Ozinga President Justin Ozinga. “It’s not every day you get to really test your skills and capabilities, and this job gave us that opportunity.”

It took months to plan and orchestrate but just twelve hours to execute the largest continuous slab-on-grade pour in the country. Fast-forward to just after 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, more than 9,000 cubic yards of concrete were on the jobsite. Of the more than 900 loads of concrete delivered, not a single truck was rejected or out of spec. Most importantly, there were zero accidents and zero injuries from over 300 people involved in the job! We are thankful for the partnership with Scurto Cement, Victory Unlimited, and Yard1, it took the hard work of so many to pull this one off!

Making History while Building Sustainably

Sustainability is at the forefront of all Ozinga’s initiatives, and this historic pour was no exception. We leveraged a CarbonSense® mix design with a 20% cement replacement for this historic pour.

Ozinga’s CarbonSense® performs just like traditional concrete while significantly reducing carbon emissions. For large-scale commerical projects, CarbonSense® can help to drastically reduce the embodied carbon emissions and contribute to net-zero goals. Workability, strength, and performance of the concrete does not have to be compromised in order to meet carbon reduction goals in building.
